What is Google AI Mode?
The confusion is understandable, since both use AI to generate an answer directly, rather than a list of links. But they sit in different places and serve different kinds of questions.
An AI Overview appears automatically, unprompted, above the normal results for a search that Google judges suits a direct summary. You didn’t ask for it specifically – it’s just there, and the regular blue links still sit underneath it if you want to click through.
AI Mode is something you actively choose. It’s a separate tab or mode, and switching into it changes the whole interaction: you can ask a longer, more complex question, get a more conversational answer, and ask follow-up questions in the same way you would with a chat assistant, rather than typing a fresh search each time.
For a business owner, the practical difference is where your content needs to earn its place. AI Overviews pull from pages already ranking well for a specific search, so the same technical SEO and content fundamentals that earn a good ranking are what earn inclusion there too. AI Mode works more conversationally across a session, which means a page needs to answer a question thoroughly and clearly enough to hold up inside a longer, multi-turn exchange, not just win a single search term.
Neither is something you optimise for directly, in the sense of a checklist that guarantees inclusion. Both reward the same underlying things: clear, accurate, well-structured content that actually answers what’s being asked, published by a source that looks credible. The distinction matters less for what you should do day to day, and more for understanding what’s actually happening when someone tells you your traffic looks different than it used to.
