Do you need link building for SEO?
Links act as a trust signal to Google. When a reputable, relevant website links to yours, it’s a small vote of confidence that your content is worth pointing people toward. Pages with more high-quality links pointing to them tend to rank better, all else being equal.
That said, link building is also the most commonly oversold – and most commonly done badly – part of SEO. Cheap, bulk-purchased links from low-quality directories or spam networks can actively harm your rankings rather than help them. Google has spent years getting better at detecting exactly this kind of manipulation.
For most local service businesses, the honest answer is that link building matters less than the fundamentals – a well-built site, genuine on-page optimisation, a complete Google Business Profile, and content that actually answers what your prospects are searching for. Businesses competing in less crowded, more local markets often see strong results without touching link building at all.
Where it does start to matter is in more competitive (often national) industries, where every serious competitor already has solid on-page SEO, and the deciding factor becomes off-page authority.
If you’re unsure whether it’s worth the investment for your specific market, that’s a conversation worth having directly – not assuming either that you definitely need it or that it’s a waste of money.
