Can I do SEO myself?
Setting up and properly filling out a Google Business Profile, writing clear titles and descriptions for your key pages, and publishing content that actually answers questions your customers ask: none of this requires specialist training, just time and attention to detail.
Where it gets harder is the technical side, and even more than that, the consistency. Technical SEO, site structure, schema markup, how pages are organised so search engines can actually find and understand them, takes real, ongoing learning to do properly, and it’s easy to get subtly wrong in ways that aren’t obvious until rankings quietly stall.
But the bigger constraint isn’t really skill. It’s time, and specifically, consistency over time.
SEO compounds when it’s done steadily, month after month, for a year or more. Most business owners who try to DIY it start strong for the first month or two – then other priorities take over, and the momentum that SEO actually depends on quietly disappears. This isn’t a criticism – it’s just how time and priorities actually work in a small business.
The honest test isn’t whether you’re capable of learning SEO. It’s whether you can realistically commit the time to it, consistently, for as long as it actually takes to work.
