WordPress vs Wix for business websites

Wix is easier to start with. Its drag-and-drop editor requires no technical knowledge, and most small businesses can have a basic site live within a few days. WordPress has a steeper learning curve if you’re building it yourself, though most businesses hire someone precisely to avoid that curve.

This is where the platforms diverge most. WordPress gives you full control over technical SEO – site structure, page speed, schema markup, and how content is organised – because you own the underlying code, not just a template. Wix has improved its SEO tools significantly, but you’re still working within what the platform allows, not what your strategy actually requires.

Pricing looks simpler on Wix at first glance: a single monthly plan that includes hosting. WordPress costs are usually split across a few things instead: hosting, a developer or agency, and any premium plugins or themes. That split can look more complex on paper, but it often costs less over time once you account for what’s actually included on each side.

Moving off Wix later is genuinely difficult. Wix doesn’t let you export your design or content to another platform. Switching later means starting over, not migrating. WordPress content can be exported and moved to a new host or developer without rebuilding from scratch, which matters more than most people expect until they’re the one trying to leave.
