Will AI replace web designers?

Quick Answer

Not for businesses that need a website to actually generate enquiries. AI is genuinely good at producing pages quickly, and considerably weaker at the parts that determine whether a site works – deciding what to say, who you’re saying it to, and why anyone should choose you over the business down the road.

AI website builders have improved fast, and it’s worth being honest about that. They can produce something clean-looking in minutes, and for a simple presence, a landing page for an event, a personal portfolio, a business that just needs to exist online, that’s often genuinely sufficient.

Where they struggle is everything upstream of the design. AI can’t sit in a room with you and work out that the thing making your business win jobs is something you’ve never thought to put on your website. It doesn’t know which objections your prospects raise before they’ll call, or which of your services actually make money versus which ones just keep you busy.

That’s the part that determines whether a website generates enquiries, and it’s what actually separates a good business website from one that just looks fine.

The other gap is judgement about your specific market. AI produces work based on patterns across enormous amounts of existing content, which means it defaults toward what’s typical. If every competitor in your industry says the same three things on their homepage, AI will very likely suggest you say them too, which is precisely the opposite of useful when the goal is standing out. This is a separate concern from whether Google penalises AI-written content, which is about the writing itself rather than how generic it sounds.

There’s a practical dimension as well. Websites need to be maintained, updated, fixed when something breaks, and adjusted as the business changes. AI can generate a site; it doesn’t take responsibility for one.

The honest position: if you need a simple site quickly and cheaply, AI tools are a legitimate option and getting better. If your website is meant to bring in work, the constraint was never the ability to produce pages, and that’s the part AI has made faster.
