What Does an SEO Agency Actually Do Every Month?

This is the single most common question we get from a prospective SEO client, and it’s a fair one. A monthly retainer with no clear picture of the actual work is a reasonable thing to be wary of. Here’s a specific answer, month by month, rather than a vague list of buzzwords. It’s the same breakdown we give any prospective client before they sign up for our SEO service.
Month One Isn’t the Same Work as Month Six
The most important thing to understand is that “SEO work” isn’t one repeated task performed every month. It’s a sequence, and what we’re actually doing shifts as the site’s position changes. Paying the same monthly amount in month one and month six doesn’t mean you’re getting the same activity – it means the value of the work compounds as the foundation gets stronger. We walk through this same sequence, stage by stage, in What Actually Happens When You Start Investing in SEO?
Month 1: Audit and Research
Technical audit of the existing website (crawlability, site speed, mobile performance, any structural issues stopping search engines from properly understanding the site), a review of current rankings and traffic, and proper keyword research to establish what your actual potential clients are searching for and how competitive those terms are. This stage produces a clear picture of where the site stands and what the priorities should be, not visible ranking movement yet.
Months 2-3: Technical Fixes and On-Page Foundations
Fixing whatever the audit identified – page titles, meta descriptions, heading structure, broken links, duplicate or thin content – and improving the technical health of the site. For businesses that rely on local visibility, this is also when Google Business Profile optimisation and local citation consistency work happens.
Months 3-6: Content and Internal Linking
New content goes live, built around the keyword research from month one and structured to answer the specific questions your actual prospective clients are asking. Internal linking between this new content and existing service pages helps both search engines and visitors understand how everything connects. This is typically when the first genuine ranking movement starts to show for lower-competition terms.
Months 6+: Authority, Local Visibility, and Refinement
Beyond six months, the work shifts toward earning genuine authority signals (mentions and links from other reputable sites relevant to your industry), continuing to build out content for a broader range of relevant topics, and refining what’s already live based on actual performance data: which pages are converting well, which search terms are driving genuine enquiries rather than just traffic. Some clients also run paid search alongside this stage rather than instead of it, a decision we cover honestly in SEO vs Google Ads: Which Is Right for Your Business?
Ongoing, Every Month, Regardless of Stage
Alongside whichever stage-specific work is happening, every month also includes monitoring rankings and traffic, tracking what competitors are doing, and reporting back to you on what’s actually happened, not a vanity list of keyword position changes, but a genuine account of visibility, traffic and enquiries. We cover exactly how that reporting should look, and what it should avoid, in How Do You Know Whether Your SEO Is Actually Working?
Why This Level of Detail Matters Before You Sign Anything
If an agency can’t give you a specific answer to “what will you actually do this month,” that’s a reasonable reason to be cautious. The work described above should be able to be laid out specifically for your business, not as a generic template, because your starting point, your industry and your competition all affect which of these activities matters most right now. We publish this same breakdown in our process rather than keeping it vague until after you’ve signed.
What to Ask for Before Committing
Ask any agency quoting you for SEO work to lay out, in writing, what the first three months would actually involve for your specific business, not a generic list of services. If they can’t do that, or the answer is vague, that’s worth treating as a warning sign. If you’d like to see what that looks like for your own business, ask us and we’ll put it in writing.
