SEO vs Google Ads: Which Is Right for Your Business?

SEO vs Google Ads: which is right for your business?

SEO and Google Ads get compared constantly, usually as “renting versus owning” traffic. That framing is directionally right but needs a caveat: SEO doesn’t guarantee ownership of anything – it’s an attempt to build organic visibility that keeps generating visits without paying per click, but it takes ongoing investment and isn’t guaranteed to work or to last. With that caveat in place, the comparison is still useful, and the per-click cost in your specific industry is often what tips the decision one way or the other.

What Each One Actually Does

Google Ads buys immediate, paid placement at the top of search results for as long as you keep paying for it. Turn the budget off and the traffic stops the same day. What you’re paying for is guaranteed placement right now, not an asset that persists.

SEO works to build organic visibility in the unpaid search results, which can continue generating visits without a per-click cost once established. It takes longer to build, on a timeline we set out honestly in How Long Does SEO Take to See Results?, isn’t guaranteed to reach or hold any particular position, and requires ongoing work to maintain (see Why SEO Isn’t a Set-and-Forget Marketing Channel), but a well-established organic position tends to be more resilient and cost-effective over time than continuously renting the equivalent paid placement.

Why the Per-Click Cost Changes the Calculation by Industry

This is where the comparison stops being generic and starts being specific to your business. The cost per click on Google Ads varies enormously by industry, and that cost is a reasonable proxy for how expensive it is to keep renting visibility indefinitely versus investing in owning it.

Legal and financial services often see some of the highest per-click costs in the market, sometimes well over $20-$30 per click for competitive terms. At that cost, a modest advertising budget buys very few clicks, and the case for investing in organic SEO, even though it takes longer, becomes considerably stronger, because the ongoing cost of renting that same visibility through ads is so high.

Trades vary a lot by trade and by region. Some trades face actually competitive, expensive paid search markets (particularly anything involving emergency callouts, where the click has high buyer intent), while others have more moderate costs. The calculation here is more case by case.

Healthcare also varies by sub-vertical, and is additionally shaped by advertising restrictions specific to healthcare marketing (AHPRA guidelines) that affect what paid ads can actually say, which sometimes makes organic content a more flexible channel regardless of cost.

When Google Ads Is Actually the Better Choice

This isn’t an argument that SEO always wins. Google Ads makes sense when you need visibility immediately (a new location opening, a seasonal service, testing a new market before committing to a longer-term SEO investment), or when your margins comfortably support the ongoing per-click cost and speed matters more than long-term cost efficiency. Plenty of businesses run both simultaneously, using ads for immediate visibility while SEO builds in the background, precisely because the two solve different problems on different timelines. That combination is part of what an SEO agency should actually be helping you plan month to month, which we cover in What Does an SEO Agency Actually Do Every Month?

What We’d Actually Recommend

The honest starting question isn’t “which is better” in the abstract – it’s “what do you need right now, and what can you sustain.” If you need enquiries this month and have budget for it, ads make sense as at least part of the plan. If you’re building for the next two to three years and the per-click cost in your industry is high, the case for prioritising SEO investment gets stronger, even though the payoff takes longer to arrive.

If you’d like a specific recommendation rather than a general comparison, tell us your budget, your timeline, and what per-click costs look like in your specific market, and we’ll give you a straight answer on where we’d put the first dollar. Where SEO is the right call, that’s exactly the work covered in our SEO work.
